Small Voices
by Janet Soutar part of the First1ine group exhibition

It’s Telling.

I have a story to tell

Silently you slip away

Embarrassed you shut your eyes

Shocked away you creep

Outraged you stamp your feet

Gossiping you gather round after

Sniggering I hear your laughter

But you say fantasist

Shut up I have no interest

I have a story to tell

So I tell it to myself.

  D

addy, who were you
            before I met you

            Were you soft and gentle
            When y
ou were only just eighteen

And the world your oyster still

Did the sun shine on your naked back

As you sat beside the Clyde

            At Govan or the Broomielaw,

            Whispering quiet words of love

            In your woman’s ear

            Before you kissed her tenderly.

When your heart was full of hope

            And your future rosy.
